DAILY DEVOTIONAL    THURSDAY JULY 3, 2003
(Ezekiel 33:6)

But if the watchman sees the enemy coming and doesn't sound the alarm and warn the people, he is responsible for their deaths. They will die in their sins, but I will charge the watchmen with their deaths.

How could anyone let a man die on purpose? Last week, the nation was captivated by the Texas case of a woman who allowed a man to die a slow death, trapped in the windshield of her car. In October of 2001, Chante Mallard was driving home after a night of partying. She had smoked marijuana, drank alcohol, and taken Ecstasy while at a local club. As she drove home, she hit a homeless man, Gregory Biggs, that was walking on the side of the road. Due to the force of the collision, Biggs literally went though her windshield head first, with half of his body in her car, and the other half outside on the hood. The amazing fact was, he was still alive!

As tragic as this story is already, it was only beginning. After hitting Biggs, rather than stopping and calling for help, Mallard actually drove home with this man stuck in her windshield and pulled into her garage. This entire time, Biggs was bleeding from his wounds, but still very much alive. Finally, after getting home, parking her car in the garage, Mallard finally got on the phone... BUT NOT TO HELP BIGGS! She called several friends throughout the early morning hours while periodically going into the garage to check on him. The following day she called two male friends to come over to get Biggs' now dead body out of her windshield, and dispose of it.

Chante Mallard was found guilty of murder and tampering with evidence at her trial last week. She was sentenced to 50 years for the murder of Gregory Biggs, and a concurrent 10 year sentence for the tampering charge. This story received much national publicity due to the unbelievable cold-hearted nature of Mallard's actions. The question still remains, after hitting this man, with him still alive, how could she not do everything possible to help save his life? How could she simply drive home, park her car, call her friends, while Biggs was literally stuck in her windshield slowly bleeding to death?

We need to pray for the Biggs family for their loss. We also need to pray for the Mallard family for their loss, since Chante will be in prison until she is a very old woman. Lastly, we need to pray for Chante. Testimony at her trial stated that she grew up in the church, that she knew who God was. I don't know what happened in her life for her to turn from God to a life of drugs and alcohol that no doubt contributed to this horrible crime, but we need to pray that during her time in prison, she will renew her relationship with the Lord and make a real commitment of her life to Him.

I am sure your question by now is, what does this have to do with me? What is the purpose of this Devotional? Simply this. It is easy for us to sit back and condemn Chante Mallard for what she did. A child can understand that what she did was a horribly wrong. She literally had a man who was dying, partly in her car with her, who without her help was not going to live. She could have driven to a hospital instead of home, but she didn't. She could have called 911 instead of her friends, but she didn't. She CHOSE to let Gregory Biggs die without even trying to save him.

THE NEXT TIME YOU ARE DRIVING YOUR CAR, AND YOU HAVE AN UNSAVED PERSON WITH YOU, AND YOU DON'T TELL THEM ABOUT JESUS.... YOU ARE NO DIFFERENT THAN CHANTE MALLARD!!! SHE WAS GUILTY OF NOT HELPING A MAN WHO WAS PHYSICALLY DYING. YOU WOULD BE GUILTY OF NOT HELPING A PERSON WHO WAS SPIRITUALLY DEAD!!!

God allows us to come in contact daily with people that are spiritually dead. The Bible tells us that those who die without Christ will be eternally separated from God. How often do we look at a person who God brings into our life as an eternal soul, realizing that if they die without accepting Christ, they will be lost for eternity? If they reject Christ, that is a choice they make much like a dying man rejecting medical attention. But our job is to share with them the words of everlasting life. When we fail to do that, God will hold us accountable.

I love you and care about you so much. I pray today that you will start to look at people as God does, as an eternal soul. Sharing our faith in Christ is not an option for the child of God, it is a requirement. I have no doubt in my mind that if you came across a person that was hurt and dying, you would do everything in your power to help save their life. My question to you today is this. If you come across a person that is lost, spiritually dead, would you do everything in your power to help them come into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and to know God's free gift of everlasting life?

I will be praying for you today. I pray that you take some time today to think about these words. I heard the outcry from people about what Chante Mallard did. It was a horrible thing to do to another person, to allow them to die without even trying to help them them. I think that it is even MORE horrible when a person that knows Christ as their Savior comes across a person that is lost, KNOWING FULL WELL IF THAT PERSON DIES IN THAT STATE THEY WILL SPEND ETERNITY IN EVERLASTING DARKNESS, and doesn't even attempt to tell them how they can receive God's gift of everlasting life. How could anyone let a person perish for eternity on purpose?

If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, if you have not accepted Him into your heart and received God's free gift of everlasting life, take a moment right now, pray, and ask God to open your heart to His TRUTH and read the words on this link: http://www.liveprayer.com/bdy_salvatn.html.
