DAILY DEVOTIONAL    FRIDAY FEBRUARY 8, 2002
(2 Samuel 11:2-5)

One night he couldn't get to sleep and went for a stroll on the roof of the palace. As he looked out over the city, he noticed a woman of unusual beauty taking her evening bath. He sent to find out who she was and was told that she was Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah. Then David sent for her and when she came he slept with her. (She had just completed the purification rites after menstruation.) Then she returned home. When she found that he had gotten her pregnant she sent a message to inform him.

The destruction of adultery. One of the biggest stories in the news last year was the disappearance of Washington DC intern Chandra Levy. My prayers went out to the Levy family and still do. It is a sad story that is still being played out, however, is a perfect illustration for today's topic of how destructive adultery is. Sin is never done in a vacuum and always has consequences. Early in my marriage, I chose to commit adultery, and am intimately familiar with the damage it can do. The fact is, for whatever fleeting moments of pleasure there may be, there is always a big price to pay for sin. Nobody wins. Innocent people are hurt. There is no more intimate act two people share other than their spiritual experience together. That is why God specifically commanded "thou shalt not commit adultery".

One fact of sin, is that it will eventually be exposed. Maybe not right way. It may be days, weeks, months, even years later, but it will be exposed. The Bible tells us this in Numbers 32:23, Job 20:27, Proverbs 26:26, and Luke 12:2. As information came out, it is apparent that California Congressman Gary Condit had many adulterous affairs spanning many years. He apparently took great measures to insure these affairs would be kept secret. But the Bible clearly tells us that our sins will one day be exposed for all to see. Congressman Condit experienced this reality. His sins scarred a 30 year record of public service, not to mention the pain and damage to his wife and family. The fact is, we need to weigh the costs of our sin BEFORE we commit them. We need to realize that there will ALWAYS be consequences for our sins.

Only time will tell what happened to Chandra Levy. But the fact is, she chose to get involved with a married man, she chose to sin. While Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky became a national event because of his choice, it took Monica Lewinsky choosing to sin as well for it to happen. As tragic as the death of Denise Brown-Simpson was several years ago, she chose to get involved with OJ while he was still married to his first wife. Again, I point out these examples to show you that there are always consequences for our sins. In today's scripture, we read of David's choice to sin with Bathsheba. Even though in that day, it would have been difficult for Bathsheba to deny the request of the king. We read how Joseph rebuffed the advances of Potiphar's wife even though he had to go to prison because of it. Each one of us has to take responsibility for our choices, and choosing to sin will always have destructive consequences. Obedience, in the end, will ALWAYS be blessed by God!

I love you and care about you so much. I will be praying for you today. For those of you who are currently involved in an adulterous relationship, RUN! Today! I realize how difficult it is to get out of sin once you get in, it is like quicksand, but I pray today that you ask God for the strength and run from your sin today! You are only asking for more heartache and pain that will be the end results of your actions, not to mention the incredible pain and heartache others will have to endure because of the choices you have made. For those of you out there right now, considering getting involved in an adulterous relationship, DON'T!!! For whatever moments of pleasure your sin may bring, it is not worth the price you will have to pay. The fact is, when we chose to sin, to rebel against God, we actually miss out on the best God has for us. We accept the scraps instead of the banquet God can provide when we do it His way. AS GLAMOROUS AS HOLLYWOOD AND THE MEDIA PORTRAY ILLICIT RELATIONSHIPS... IT IS AN ILLUSION. They never show you the full force of the pain and destruction that is the end result and reality of sin.

Again, I will be praying for you today. For the young adults our there, even though this is primarily about the sin of adultery, never forget that fornication is ANY sexual relations outside of marriage. Fornication is clearly defined as a sin. God has so much for our lives, if we will simply surrender to His will, and do it His way. When we rebel, when we choose to sin, we will always have to pay a price, a big price. We hurt many people in the process, many innocent people who have done nothing wrong. Let the real life examples from David and Bathsheba, from the Chandra Levy event, be examples of the destruction adultery can cause. There is always a price to sin.

Your friend and brother in Christ,
Bill Keller
