DAILY DEVOTIONAL    TUESDAY MAY 6, 2003
(Numbers 32:23, Ecclesiastes 12:14)

But if you don't do as you have said, then you will have sinned against the Lord, and you may be sure that your sin will catch up with you.

For God will judge us for everything we do, including every hidden thing, good or bad.

"There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known."  Luke 12:2

Your sins WILL be exposed and cost you! Mike Price is a very successful college football coach. Larry Eustachy is a very successful college basketball coach. Both men have been in the news recently, not because of the accomplishments of their teams, but because of their personal lives. Price, who just 4 months ago was hired as the head football coach at the University of Alabama, was fired from his job over the weekend for failure to live his "personal and professional life in a manner consistent with university policies." This stemmed from his conduct on a trip last month to a pro-am golf tournament where he spent hundreds of dollars at a topless bar, and the next morning, a woman that was not his wife ordered about $1,000 of room service and charged it to his hotel bill.

Eustachy, the head basketball coach at Iowa State University for the last 5 years, has been suspended without pay and his firing appears imminent. Last week, photos surfaced of Eustachy at a party on the campus of the University of Missouri after his team had lost a game, holding a beer can while kissing and being kissed by a co-ed.

There is currently a national debate whether it is fair for these men to lose their jobs for their conduct off the field and court. Many say no it is not, that what they do in their private time is their own business. Does that sound like a familiar argument? Clearly, they deserve to be fired due to their public behavior, and legally these universities can do it based on the "morals clause" in their contracts. These men are being paid over 1 million dollars a year for their expertise to successfully run a Division 1 athletic program. In that role, they become the face, the representative to the public of those programs.

While college athletics is about sportsmanship and helping to develop the athletic skills and lives of the student athlete, make no mistake about it, at Division 1 programs like Alabama and Iowa State it is a big business. That is why winning is a must, since a winning program brings incredible amounts of money into the university. Head coaches are expected to do two things, win AND represent their university in the public. What Price and Eustachy did was make poor choices in their personal lives that reflected negatively on their schools. Their poor choices have cost them dearly.

The two points that I want you to understand today is that one day, your sins WILL be exposed, and that sin always carries a very high price tag. The fact is, you may be able to commit adultery or any other type of sin many times without getting caught. I would highly doubt that this was Price's first trip to a strip club, or Eustachy's first appearance at a campus party.  But eventually, God will allow your sins to be exposed. When that happens, you will find out that sin costs, and costs dearly. It can cost you money, your career, your marriage, your relationship with your children, your standing in the community, any or all of these things, not to mention the damage that sin does to your relationship with God.

I love you and care about you so much. I don't care how old you are, I don't care whether you are a man or a woman, sin is no respecter of person. 1 John 1:8 tells us that if we say we don't sin, we are lying to ourselves. Knowing that we all sin, knowing that we all have weaknesses in our life, OUR DAILY CONNECTION WITH THE LORD IS CRITICAL TO HELP US IN THE DECISIONS THAT WE MAKE THROUGHOUT EACH DAY! My friend, if there is ever anything I have ever said that you heard, please, hear these words again. OUR DAILY CONNECTION WITH THE LORD IS CRITICAL TO HELP US IN THE DECISIONS THAT WE MAKE THROUGHOUT EACH DAY!

***My friend, if there is ever anything I have ever said that you heard, please, hear these words again.  OUR DAILY CONNECTION WITH THE LORD IS CRITICAL TO HELP US IN THE DECISIONS THAT WE MAKE THROUGHOUT EACH DAY!

This is why I beg you to make the time each day, preferably first thing in the morning, to spend time in prayer and in the Word of God. That time with the Lord is what helps you to focus on the day ahead, helps you to find direction for the day, and gives you the strength to make GODLY choices throughout the day. It is that daily connection that helps you to battle sin in your life. It is that daily connection that, when friends ask you to join them for a few drinks at the local strip club, helps you to say NO. It is that daily connection that, when a man or woman that is not your spouse offers themselves to you, allows you to say NO. It is that daily connection that, when you are confronted with the choice of being in a place that you should not be, allows you not to go.

BEING CONNECTED EACH AND EVERY MORNING TO THE LORD IS HOW YOU ARE ABLE TO STAND UP TO SIN, AND WHAT HELPS YOU TO MAKE GODLY CHOICES THROUGHOUT EACH DAY.

I will be praying today for Coaches Price and Eustachy and their families at this difficult time in their lives. Sadly, they have learned that what the words in Luke 12:2 say are true.

"It will become as evident as yeast in dough."

They are now dealing with the high price of their sins. I am praying for you too. Praying that you learn from these two men, and hear the words that I am speaking to you today about your daily time with the Lord. You CANNOT sin and get away with it. Your sins WILL eventually be exposed.

When that happens, you will find that sin has a high price. The Bible tells us that satan's goal is to kill, steal, and destroy. Satan lures us into sin, knowing that eventually our sins will be exposed, and that we will have to pay a big price for them. When Jesus was tempted by satan, He did what? Argue with him? No. Negotiate with him? No. He quoted the Word of God to him, strengthened Himself in the power of God's Word and withstood the temptations of the enemy.

God promised that our sins WILL be exposed. Our sins carry a high price. Knowing this, stay connected to the Lord each morning so that you will make GODLY CHOICES throughout the day!

In His love and service,
Your friend and brother in Christ,
